Irritating Flashing Monitor.

Question

I have an Inspiron Desktop 580 and a Dell ST2320L monitor with an irritating flashing screen. Some days it is fine, some days it will flash on and off and other days it will flash off and not back on. Most times I can get away with turning the monitor off for a couple moments and then turning it back on. Other times I have to kill the computer the hard way to get the screen back which can't be good for the entire system. Dell chat says my drivers are up-to-date and the screen resolution is set correctly. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any ideas better than restoring my system back to factory setup like Dell chat told me to do the third time I was online with them? I did just that with no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Disconnect the monitor from the computer (all cables). Turn the monitor on. What appears? Does it flash?
