Keep the Monitor on
I have a new Dell 4600 and though it is nice, if I leave it for any length of time the screen turns off and takes a while to recover. When I had a Dimension V350, it was possible to skip the E stuff and keep it on until you turned it off.
How now brown cow?

Not sure if you were looking for an answer or just making an observation but go to Control Panel>Power Options and, under "Power Schemes", make sure each box says "never".
