May 2000 Mfg. Ultrascan P780 Trinitron

The summer of year 2000 we replaced the Windows 95 Dell computers in our 1998 student computer Lab with systems and used CRT monitors that were manufactured in May, 2000, and which came with 38 Optiplex GX-110 systems. The desks have glass surface inserts (maybe plexiglas) and the CRT monitor tucks underneath, so that nothing except a shield against overhead fluorescent lighting sits above the top surface of the desk. There are twelve of these desks and last Friday one CRT faded out (light "died"). Fortunately in this instance I had an identical CRT which I could just slip into the same desk unit. After this, that may not be so easy. I am realizing these CRT monitors have been "burning" for about eight years since manufacture. I do not think we want to use CRT monitors to replace in the future. What display device would work best to serve the same purpose (underneath the glass, with the video facing up more toward the ceiling) among Dell's products? If you have noticed the service manager's station in your car dealership you may have seen this same sort of computer station furniture except in that case the user might stand or sit on a bar-height stool.

CRT monitors are readily available as more and more people are turning to lcd's. My local electronics recycler has row and rows of monitors on their way for dismantling. You may want to stock up now if you do not want to change your furniture.

Have you tried using a lcd under the glass? or creating a new monting location for it?  Maybe the swing arm mounts will be acceptable as an above the glass solution.

The newer better quality lcds can handle direct light much better than the old ones. Because the furniture and lighting conditions are unique to your location, it would be hard to pick a specific model to suggest. Also you'll need to know your space limitations.
