TURN OFF - LEAVE OFF - Call DELL and have them replace it immediately. That could be a huge indicator of an electrical short and could have some serious consequences for you or your home. None of these monitors should ever smell, smoke or anything like that and especially not have an "electrical burn smell." The last thing you want is that monitor bursting into some form of combustion and or loss of your computer itself.

Not trying be overly dramatic here, but things-electrical are clearly things seriously at risk.

oh yes that is true a faint plastique smell .... but if it is really strong and odorful, and all that - that all different. That is how I understand the post. But yeah if it didnt have the visible stuff and other descriptors I would have said probably nermal (sic)... ehehe.... anyway lets hope they figure it out asap what going on.

Ok, well the smoke part is not. However it is very common with new electroics to have a "smell".

Ok, that was over-reacting.

Most new monitors have a break in period, and when they are first hooked up you may smell a "plastic" or "electrical burn" Smell. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just the parts warming up and getting adjusted. New cars do the same thing, in fact amny new cars are taken to the dealership by irate customers over funny smells when in fact it's just hte car breaking in.

Thanks for your replies.  There are only 2 users out there who ever had a smelly a monitor?  I have the replacement monitor and this one also smells, but only a little heating, plastic smell.  The first one gave off a strong odor and left a haze in the room.  My wife could smell it down the hall.

No one answered about the difference between the E773s and c models.  When I called Dell about the smell, they seemed surprised I had an s model.  They doubted the numbers I gave them off the monitor.  Any suggestions?

Dunno about the model questions - at this point if the monitor you are asking about is the one about to combust - I would call Dell and simply tell them you see smoke / haze etc that will trigger an immediate replacement - well it better because its kind of obvious something serious is wrong with the monitor.

Hi Jerry and everyone.

Did the replacement monitor have the same smell?Dell is sending me my THIRD monitor.  Customer service says they have never heard of these problems!!!!!

The two monitors have been very toxic - throat started hurting, coughing, tongue tingling - just plain horrible.

Does this smell ever go away - how long to burn off?  I guess I could set it up outside and let it run.  Can anyone give me any hope that this will get better - if I should live that long.

Thanks

Doreen

Well hopefully the replacement would not. Just keep in mind that if you are beyond your 30 days, Dell will send "whatever" they have - this could be a new unit or a used one, or a refurbished one. Of course if you are having these toxic problems get your monitor replaced immediately. And no you should not be expecting replacement monitors to exhibit the same problem, and if you do, well get right back on the phone or email etc and have it replaced.

Hello Doreen,

I received this second monitor on Jan. 30.  Today it's March 2 and there is still a slight odor.  It's not as bad as the first one and there is no visible smoke or haze.  There seems to be less odor each day, but I never experienced this problem with a monitor before.  I also experienced a dry mouth and sore throat, but I thought it was me.  The next computer will come from a store and I will read their return policy very carefully.

Dell has been terrible.  The lost a customer.

Jerry
