It sounds like Windows Update may have pushed a new video card driver onto your PC. You could reload the original Dell video card driver and see if the issue goes away.
* Dimension 3100 video card
driver * Click Download Now
* Click Run and follow the prompts
* When finished, restart the PC

thank you for responding to my question, I thought I would just check things before I downloaded the driver and my system is a
Dimension 3000 (stupid me !!!) NOT 3100, can you tell me if its still the same driver? I don't want to make things any worse by downloading the wrong thing.

Hi I have the same issue except my computer turns completely black after the auto adjust in progress disappears.
When I move the mouse or press any keys nothing happens.
