Monitor question, widescreen vs. standard format....

I will get a 19" flat panel, but am torn between the wide format vs. standard. I have NO intention of watching DVDs on my screen, so why pay extra for wide sreen? Also the 19" wide screen loses about 2  inches in the vertical dimension when compared with standard format 19" (the wide sreen gets about 2 extra inches horizontal measurement). Thus most of the web pages and programs I use would actually show more info on the standard screen. Having put my argument out for standard screen over the widescreen, play devil's advocate and tell me where I may be missing something. Only program I can think of where wide may be better would be with Excel, but I use it so rarely the pt. is moot in that regard. TIA.

With my 24 incher.....

I can have more on the screen without scrolling.  Two documents side by side

Another reason is that many more games are now being written for the wide screen, and that's a plus for gamers.

Hi, you need to compare pixel dimensions too, not just physical size. This site will help.

I have a 20" widescreen, which has slightly more pixels vertically than a regular 19", but is 400 pixels wider. I find the extra width of little use in Word or browser windows, (but I guess i could keep the sidebar open all the time if I wanted). I usually resize those windows so they are more or less square, revealing some useful desktop space for widgets, shortcuts etc. I use other apps where the extra width is really useful, and I watch DTV and DVDs full screen.
