Thanks, tomintx. Will check out that link. Maybe they can help me determine which CD has those drivers on it. None of the CD's shipped with my Dell state specifically that they are for the Nvidia card....
Thanks again for taking the time to reply and for a place to start.
On the link is the instruction and another link for getting the driver directly from the Nvidia site depending on your O/S. Use it or the one below and follow the instructions to install the new driver. I don't recommend you use the driver off your Resource CD, as they are likely way outdated.
WooHoo !! Went there, did that, and MAGIC !! Colors are right and everything fits again !
Many, many Thanks.
This all started Fri. morning when comp. wouldn't turn off. Had to pull the power plug. Sat. a.m. had lost all Icons and Start/Taskbar. Spent about 3 hrs. on phone with Dell tech somewhere in the Phillipines.... went thru' the whole thing - safe mode, restore (wouldn't), etc., etc.... Her final diagnosis was to re-install my Windows XP Home.... No way, not without checking out everything else I could think of and going to the Forums for help and advice....
Thanks to you, that ordeal was bypassed. Thanks again.
If the problem surfaces again, and you did not use the driver cleaner on this latest reinstall, do so next time, then reinstall the driver again. Chances are though, since the driver did install and is operating OK, that any corrupted files were overwritten. Enjoy. Next time you have a full lockup, try to just press and hold the power button on the PC, this allows a bit more stateful shutdown then pulling the plug.
The one constructive thing I did learn from the tech Sat. a.m. was how to shut it down by holding the power button..... (I don't speak Filipino English, so that was not a fun session !) Wish Dell would bring the phone service dept. back to Texas and US English. Had not seen that method described anywhere before.... I will remember.
Did not run the driver cleaner, but since the newest version was 6177 and the old one was 5216, I just downloaded the new one and it installed OK. With a dial-up connection you just try to do the least downloading possible....

Sounds as though you need to reinstall your video driver (not monitor). See FAQ at top of video forum, linked here.

Hi, tomintx:
