Problem DVI Green Screen

I have an XPS 8910 with the Dell supplied GTX 1070 video card connected to a Dell ultra sharp 27 inch monitor. I have always used a DP cable which works fine.  I have been trying to connect a MacBook Pro to the monitor at 2560 x 1440 resolution. I bought a Thunderbolt 2 (mini DP) to DVI D adapter connected to a DVI D cable and connected that to the GTX 1070 card. The best I can get 1980 x 1024 when I connect to the DVI connector.  Apparently the only way to get the 2560 x 1440 resolution is to buy a $130 Apple adapter that includes a USB connection to boost power. I tried the DVI D cable to connect to the GTX 1070 card and got a blurry  green screen.  I planned to connect the MacBook Pro to the 1070 DP connector using a Thunderbolt 2 to DP cable.

Any ideas on why the display would be green and blurry when connected through the DVI D connector?

I realized that I was using a single link DVI-D cable. I found a dual link cable that came with the monitor and it works.
