Here are some things to try and resolve the issue with the backlight. If that does not resolve your issue you can email support@dell.com and get a replacement.
This is usually called backlight bleeding. Where some of the light is escaping causing it to be lighter in areas, but usually only noticable on a black screen. Also, when first turning on the screen it won't be that bad, but after a couple hours of warmup it will look worse.
This is a hardware problem. Adjusting colors and brightness down might lessen the effect, but that isn't an option if your like a bright screen. Auto adjust only works under VGA.
Some people try things like leaving the screen laying on it's face overnight, not sure if on or off, or let it heatup some then turnoff all night. Some say a really warm room can make it worse, so if you can open a window and let the room temp go down it might improve the screen.
But in the end this is a defect and should be replaced. I hear the 2001fp screens don't have this problem much anymore, so it's worth a shot. Compared to 2005fpw buyers that do 4 replacements without getting a perfect screen.
So use that e-mail Jesse posted. Simply say you yoru screen has backlight bleeding and you'd like a replacement. Post your home number, account and order numbers. If you bought it with a full system, then you'll probably have a service number somewhere on the LCD or computer, post that number too. If you only bought the LCD, semd the serial numbers and tell them you don't have a service number since you didn't buy a system so they don't waste an e-mail asking for it.
If you're still in your 21 return time you'll receive a new screen, if not it's under warranty and you'll only get a refurbed screen.
Again, this is a physical hardware problem, nothing that can be fixed by software. So don't let a dell rep say there will be a driver update taht fixes this issue, as that is false, and many 2005fpw owners have gotten that response.
Here are examples of three 2005fpws next to each other, notice the lighter areas:

Notice the lighter areas on the top corners while in a dark game:

More overexposed to show it better witht he 2005fpw next to a 15inch Dell LCD 2 years old and a laptop that has bleeded expected on a laptop:

They first send you the replacement using overnight (though it might take a couple days for it to be ready). Then once you receive it it should have a return shipping label within the plastic bag on the outside with the invoice. Use that same box to repack the bad screen and mail it back, If you get it back to them within 10 days ignore the invoice, I think it was 10 days, double check though. If it's Airborn Express return label, I think that's DHL shipping, use their site to find businesses that let you drop it off or schedule a pickup through their site. If not sure what shipping company it is, just check the tracking number used to ship it to you.
But first try using both screens at once to determine if the replacement is better than the original.
