Problem with display, unable to update drivers

I have a friends machine that I am trying to fix for him.  LAST time I offer that!  He fried the machine with spyware.  He then used his recovery dick to reload Win XP.  He then passed it off to me.  The screen is only showing up in 8 bit color.  I downloaded a new driver onto a USB and shot it over to his machine.  I have tried to update the driver using My Computer/Manage and I can see there are numerous drivers missing including the VGA monitor and Ethernet.  So I cannot get to the net to let the machine solve its own problem.  I have tried to follow the XP troubleshooting methods but the tabs it is telling me to click on are not highlighted!  They are not clickable!  Such as the Display Prop/Settings/Advanced/Monitor/PROPERTIES.  The properties tab is not highlighted so I cannot update the dern driver!

I have installed the driver rest tool and that starts working then tries to go out and find the driver but I have no friggen internet connection due to a lack of Ethernet drivers!

If I HAD hair I would be pulling it out!

If it matters it is a Dell 3000 with a E173FPf monitor

Go here to download the appropriate drivers, in particular the Chipset, Ethernet and Graphics drivers (using another machine). Make sure you get the correct Graphics driver. You can use Everest to identify the hardware.

Check in Device Manager that all device drivers are installed.

I was able to use Everest and got the video to work correctly. As for the Ethernet cards, aint happening. I will try again tomorrow though. Thanks for the guidance so far!
