Problem with new 1901 Flat Panel Monitor
I just bought a Dell 1901 flat panel monitor. It works fine when webpages are stationary on my screen. Colors are good. However, when I attempt to scroll up or down on a page with a dark background, the page turns very dark and is unreadable. Similarly, when I scroll on a page with a white background, the blue colored links turn very dark blue. Once I stop scrolling, everything is fine again.
I have set the display to the recommended 1280x1024 resolution. I am using Windows 98SE, which I was told would work fine with this monitor.
This cannot be how the monitor is designed. I returned the first monitor from Dell when it exhibited these symptoms. Now the second one is doing the same thing. HELP!

Unfortunately, I cannot try the monitor on another computer. Only have this one.
My guess is that I need to make some adjustment to either a video driver, graphics card, display setting, etc....
Any thoughts?

What video card are you using? How much video memory? Are you using the analog or DVI connection?
What type computer? What processor?

Tonight I spent an hour on the phone with a Dell tech updating the video drivers. The problem is still there. Tomorrow I will find another computer to test the monitor on to see if it is the monitor or the video card. I still suspect the monitor. I am using an NVIDIA TNT card with 64 mb. The monitor is connected with the analog connection since I don't have a DVI connector. I am using a Dimension 4100 with 384 mb of RAM.
I still think that the problem is with the monitor since, before I made the switch to the first of the 1901 monitors, I had no problems.

You said you set the resolution to 1280x1024.
Did you set the refresh rate to 60Hz?

Yes...I also seem to have a "haze" effect which covers the entire webpage. Subtle but noticible.
I am going to test this monitor on another computer today and will report back. I am sure it is the monitor since I did not have any problems at all until I replaced my original CRT monitor with the first of the two 1901 monitors.

Lisa-
I'm glad you finally confirmed that it is the monitor. Sorry you've had such bad luck. For what it's worth, there are many 1901FP users, including myself, who are very happy and who have had no problems whatsoever. But I can't blame you if you want to try something different after all you've been through.

Chip: Your news is really interesting since nobody else here - or on a tech forum that I visit - had the same symptoms. I sent 1 1/2 weeks with Dell emails and phone techs trying to figure out a fix. I updated video drivers and was all set to buy a new video card. I finally tried the second monitor on my friend's computer...same exact problem. I knew at that point that both monitors were truly defective and that my machine was not the culprit. The Dell techs - while trying to be helpful - didn't have a clue as to the cause of the problem. I had never seen a flat panel monitor in action before but I knew that it couldn't be designed to operate this way.
FWIW, I ran Windows 98SE, 384 mb of RAM, NVIDIA TNT card, and used the analog connection. I had the resolution set to the recommended number and the refresh rate was 60 hz.
I finally decided to return both defective monitors and to wait for Dell to run a sale on their Planar 191M.
Hope this helps...
