Problems with Dual Display with GeForce 8400gs, Dell Monitor, and HDTV
Hello all! I am planning on canceling my cable tv service and wanted to be able to watch tv via online options on my tv. I have an XFX GeForce 8400gs and am trying to set up my LCD Dell monitor (E173FP) with my LCD TV as a second monitor. I am running Windows XP Pro with the newest driver for my video card (266.58). The connections that I am using are VGA to VGA and DVI-I to VGA. I am just going to post what I have gathered from messing with this for the past 2 days, but I have attached the step by step of everything that I have tried (this post would have been amazingly long if I shared everything).
1. It seems that when both monitors are connected when the system starts, it by default chooses the VGA to VGA connection as the primary display.
2. The TV works when connected via VGA to VGA, but is only detected as HDTV with the monitor as the primary with DVI-I to VGA.
3. Once the monitor goes into power save mode, I must restart to 'awaken' it.
4. The connection scheme dictates which display options are shown in NVidia Control Panel.
This may have seemed vague, but I have written all of my 'experiments' up in a word doc and attached it. So, if you might be able to help, please take a look. I have no idea what to try next. I really appreciate your help!

If anyone is interested, this was solved by reverting to NVidia driver 178.24.

Today, when I connected my monitor via dvi-i to vga and waited until it logged in to connect the tv via vga to vga, I was able to get a picture on both at the lowest resolution (800 x 600). So, this is progress, but dualview is not an option and I would rather not work on my main monitor on this resolution. Also, windows display settings does not detect the tv like this.
I also tried with the tv connected via vga to vga and the tv connected via dvi-i to vga (from startup). This by default makes the tv the primary display, which is fine. It goes black after the xp screen, so I have to connect the vga to the monitor, lower the resolution, and connect it back to the tv. From there I tried to enable dualview (yes, it is an option with this setup), but the tv was in power save mode and could no be awaken.
