S2240Ms + AMD Radeon R9 270 (XPS 8700), Cable Configuration
I want to hook up two monitors to my dell xps 8700 special edition. I don't know what cable to purchase and what ports on the video card to use
* Dell monitor model? 2 Dell S2240M 21.5"
* What specific computer model, desktop/laptop? desktop Dell 8700, special edition
* What operating system? Windows 8.1, 64 bit
* What video card? AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5
* What video out ports are available on the video card? looks like two dvi ports, but they are slightly different looking
* What video out port are you using from the video card to what video in port on the monitor? currently I am using the top dvi port + dvi -> vga converter to hook up one monitor. It works well
* What cable are you using to attach the video card to the monitor? this is what I am trying to figure out, what cable(s) should I purchase.
* Are you using the Dell supplied cable? I am planning on purchasing one from the store

I went to Fry's and purchased two DVI-D cables. The video card has two DVI connections. Each monitor has a DVI connection. I connected everything up and it works.

I went to Fry's and purchased two DVI-D to DVI-D single link cables. Since the video card has two DVI connectors I just connected one cable to each connector and the other end to the monitors and voila, it worked.

Purchase two DVI-D cables.
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-I out --> DVI to DVI cable --> Monitor 1 DVI in
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-D out --> DVI to DVI cable --> Monitor 2 DVI in

Here is what I did:
Purchase two DVI-D cables.
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-I out --> DVI to DVI cable --> Monitor 1 DVI in
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-D out --> DVI to DVI cable --> Monitor 2 DVI in

This is an odd mix. You have a high end video card and a low end 1920x1080 monitor. The possible cable configurations will be odd.
The AMD Radeon R9 270 has the following out ports =
DVI-I 1920×1200
DVI-D 2560×1600
DP 2560×1600
HDMI 1920x1080
The S2240M has the following in ports =
VGA 1920x1080
DVI-I 1920x1080
We only provided a VGA cable and possibly a DVI to HDMI dongle with the S2240M.
Current setup =
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-I out --> DVI to VGA converter --> VGA to VGA cable --> Monitor 1 VGA in
Second monitor setup =
AMD Radeon R9 270 HDMI out --> HDMI to VGA converter --> VGA to VGA cable --> Monitor 2 VGA in
AMD Radeon R9 270 DVI-D out --> DVI to DVI cable --> Monitor 2 DVI-I in
