I know of no way to turn the monitor on/off via software.

OK - that's what I figured.

If I simply let the monitor go into power-save mode instead of physically powering the monitor off, how much will that have an impact on:

  • The monitor's expected lifespan (wear & tear) - is it still going to be running electrical components of the monitor all the time then?
  • Electricity used? Obviously the little orange lights stay on this way, but does it use any other electricity or how much does this matter?

This would be the easiest and most convenient solution if the impact is negligible.

Thanks!

No idea on wear and tear. Except for the panel, yes. I cannot see it using that much electricity in its Power Save Mode but we do not have documentation on this.

Chris,

In the monitor's User Guide, on pg 6 under "Power Management Modes" there is a table that lists how much power the monitor uses in various modes. The "Active-off mode" i.e. (Power Save Mode) shows the same power consumption as when switched off (< 0.5W). So obviously the electricity-used impact is negligible.

However it lists both Syncs, and Video (panel?), as Inactive & Blank respectively in "Active-off mode" vs. it just shows dashes for those columns when powered off:

  • Does this mean these components are technically still "on" and therefore might prematurely wear out the monitor?
  • I'm not sure what you meant by "Except for the panel, yes" in your last reply - could you please clarify?

I realize you may not know the answer, but can you please find out from someone else at Dell who does? I really want to know the long-term impact of deciding to leave the monitors powered on 24/7/365 vs. physically powering them off at night.

Thanks!

* Any ON usage will wear out the monitor over time. How long, no one knows.

* Yes.

No one knows the long-term impact.
