S2718HN, DDM has no auto mode

Hello, I just purchased the aforementioned monitor and after installing the latest DDM software on my Windows 10 computer, I noticed that the auto mode is grayed out, why is that? Computer runs the latest Windows 10 operating system update, using an Nvidia GTX 1060 with also the latest drivers. The display is automatically using HDMI 1.4 when anything but HDR mode and HDMI 2.0 when HDR is on.

Re: automode, it turns out this is not supported by design on S2x18 models, but if you are comfortable editing the registry you can bypass this firmware limitation by adding the value "IgnoreF1.7" = 0x00000001 (dword) to HKCU\Software\EnTech\DDM, and then restarting DDM.

If HDR is on, auto-mode is off.

I'm using the Standard profile on the monitor and HDR is off on Windows.

Just to confirm your S2718HN usage...

HDR On =
* Right click on Windows 10 Display Settings
* Switch HDR and advanced colors to On
* Open the S2718HN Menu- Color- Preset Modes
* Choose either Movie HDR or Game HDR

HDR Off =
* Right click on Windows 10 Display Settings
* Switch HDR and advanced colors to Off
* Open the S2718HN Menu- Color- Preset Modes
* Choose either Standard, ComfortView, Multimedia, Movie, Warm, Cool, Custom Color

Right. Thing is, in order to activate HDR on Windows, I have first to enable an HDR preset from the monitor otherwise there is no such option visible.

I did notice from the device manager on windows, that my monitor uses HDMI 1.4 connection when no HDR profile is selected and when selected it switches to HDMI 2.0.

So the order in those instructions was not correct =

HDR On =
* Open the S2718HN Menu- Color- Preset Modes
* Choose either Movie HDR or Game HDR
* Exit the monitor Menu
* Right click on Windows 10 Display Settings
* Switch HDR and advanced colors to On

HDR Off =
* Open the S2718HN Menu- Color- Preset Modes
* Choose either Standard, ComfortView, Multimedia, Movie, Warm, Cool, Custom Color
* Exit the monitor Menu
* Right click on Windows 10 Display Settings
* Switch HDR and advanced colors to Off

Still not sure why DDM auto-mode is not working. Go to non-HDR, standard preset mode. Then, press/hold the shift key, right click on the DDM system tray icon, select "Save diagnostic report" from the popup menu. Post it for swamped.

Here is the diagnostics txt as you asked me. I also added a screenshot to highlight the issue.

You may need to wait for a new DDM release....

Maybe you can help me with my other issue. Whenever I activate HDR on my monitor and then on Windows everything looks very blurry as if the monitor is running a much lower resolution.

I checked with nVidia Control Panel and it HDR only works if I choose the 10bit or 12bit color depth and will refuse to go to HDR mode if I choose 8bit, which I know is what this monitor supports (6bit+FCR).

That is normal. Windows will always look bad if HDR is On. Windows itself is not HDR capable. Only dedicated HDR movies and games are HDR capable. Which is why when you go back to non-HDR windows desktop, you have to turn HDR Off.

Editing the registry seems to have fixed the issue, thanks a lot!

Weird thought that it is not available for my monitor, I wonder why honestly.

Its because on these models switching between HDR and SDR preset modes generates a hotplug event in Windows. Imagine you had set the default Windows desktop mode = Standard, and had Edge set to MovieHDR. Whenever you switched to or from Edge the screen would blank as a hotplug event was registered and processed by the OS.

With the IgnoreF1.7 switch, DDM substitutes Movie[SDR] and Game[SDR] presets where ever MovieHDR and GameHDR are auto-requested and the system is in SDR mode. Does that make sense?

Absolutely, though to me it would make more sense to have auto mode and give a warning about HDR modes but that's just me I guess, as a power user I would understand but probably other casual users might get confused by it.
