The S2719DGF does not have built-in speakers.

Check the online S2719DGF User's Guide. It shows an Audio line out port for "external active speakers" =

Thanks for your response.

I was afraid this would be the answer. I almost said in the question, please don't tell me to use external speakers.

I'm sorry, but isn't a fairly new, expensive gaming monitor with built-in speakers supposed to be able to play HDMI-in audio through those those speakers?

I don't mean to  be sarcastic, but if the internal speakers cannot play HDMI audio, why are they even built in to the monitor?

I naively hoped to use the built-in speakers on this monitor, which I bought direct rom Dell several years ago, because of a lack of space in my new work area.

Sorry, I didn't read your response carefully enough. I was under the mistaken impression that most monitors with HDMI have speakers.

I also have low expectations of this monitor which has had problems displaying resolutions higher than 1080p from the Xbox One X, though it does so from PCs with Geforce cards. Overall this monitor has been a disappointment.

Since we are on the topic, though, if I connect a set of powered speakers to the monitor will the audio from both HDMI sources (Xbox and Roku) be successfully transferred through the monitor to the speakers? Or will it be dependent on compatibility/driver issues between the monitor and those two devices.

Also, when I went to type in the full name of my Roku device the Roku Strxxxxxx Stick, I was told the word strrxxxxx was not allowed on this forum. Out of curiosity, what's that about?

"but isn't a fairly new, expensive gaming monitor with built-in speakers"
"if the internal speakers"
"use the built-in speakers on this monitor"

You must have missed the first sentence in my reply above =

"The S2719DGF does not have built-in speakers."

This is also noted in a non-Dell review of the S2719DGF =

Because spammers use that word when advertising their "service", we had to block it.

The source device (PC/PlayStation/Xbox, etc.) control the audio entering the monitor via their HDMI or DP out. Each of those has an audio control panel in which you choose the monitor as the default audio output device. So yes, if external speakers are connected to the S2719DGF, you should be able to get audio.

In my case for example, I enter the Windows 10 Sound. I can then choose either my Jabra headset or my U3415 monitor (which has built-in speakers) as the audio output device.
