S3422DW, MacBookPro M1, input timing is not supported
I just bought a DELL S3422DW curved monitor. It runs excellent with the older MacBook Pro (15", 2017, macOS Big Sur 11.5.2). Also 3440x1440 is no problem. Today I contacted my new MacBook Pro M1 (14", 2021, macOS Monterey) and got the message "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Change your input timing to 3440x1440, 60Hz." (translated from German, so English message might have a different wording). If I chose 2560x1080, the monitor show the right picture, but that is not what I am looking for. If I use a Samsung 34"curved display, I do not have the problem. It can also show the 3440x1440 resolution. Within the macOS I can change the resolution of the monitor, but not the repeat rate (60Hz). This can just be changed for the internal monitor. But this might be the problem.
For both MacBooks I used the same HDMI cable. I really like the monitor, but if I cannot use it with the actual MacBook Pro, I would have to send it back. Can anybody help? Thank you in advance.

Dell support was useless on this topic. They were actually pretty rude, Customer Support said, sorry your monitor is out of warranty (this isn't a warranty issue) and that unless I was trying to connect a dell computer to a dell monitor they wouldn't help me.
It's not perfect but here is what I found that works (sort of, the resolution is funky but at least I can use it)
System Preferences >Display >Display >Resolution: >Scaled >1920 x 1080, 60 Hz >Gather Windows >Change
also, 2560x1080 is supported and seems to work (looks way better than 1920 (of course) ) all the other resolutions don't seem to be supported. for me at least, hope this helps someone.

Thank you so much for this. I was going to buy another cable thinking this could be the problem. A tip for new OSX, the path in my case was:
System Preferences > Display > (select your display) > tick "show all resolutions" > 1980 x 1080 (low resolution). Now you can choose another frequency (mine offered 25hz, 30hz and finally 60hz).
Had this problem on dell P2719H
Kudos!

The S3422DW are still in warranty. But, none of the S series monitors are supported by Dell agents with macOS. Which is why they wanted you to test on Windows OS. Why the macOS M1 cannot do 3440x1440 50/60/100Hz (DP/HDMI) is unknown to Dell. You both should create threads on the Apple Forum to get further assistance from other S3422DW users.
