Sony Vaio and Dell U2711 Monitor

My Dell U2711 monitor just arrived and it is a beauty.

Just wanted to pick someones's brain after looking extensively for an answer only to find many different views!

I own a Sony Vaio VPCF12X5E.

It has an HDMI port and a VGA  port.

The graphics card is NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M 1GB

I have tried to connect the monitor via the standard VGA connection and HDMI (think it's 1.3) and the max resolution achieved is 1920 x 1080. I also tried the single link DVI cable supplied with the monitor along with a Belkin DVI to VGA adapter but this just doesn't pick up the monitor at all.

Before spending a lot of money, has anyone got any recommendations? How would I know if my graphics card is capable of displaying the maximum 2560x1440?

A couple of options I was looking at were:

Belkin HDMI to DisplayPort cable: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/belkin-hdmi-to-displayport-av-cable-1-8m-10819389-pdt.html

Or a HDMI 1.4 cable.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

heyindy,

HDMI is a video mode and not a graphics mode. The highest HDMI can go is 1080p which is 1920x1080. SInce your Vaio does not have DVI, 2560x1440 is not possible. The U2711 VGA can do 2048x1152 but I do not know if the Vaio video card supports this. Try connecting the U2711 VGA cable to both the Vaio VGA and the U2711 VGA. What resolutions can you achieve?

We do not have any apple product in our labs to test on so I cannot verify that this works but other apple customers have had success. apple cables are proprietary and have issues with Dell monitors. You will need to purchase the Accell B112B-001B UltraAV adapter (Mini DisplayPort/DisplayPort) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003TSDG06

apple mini displayport--> Accell B112B-001B UltraAV mini displayport--> Accell B112B-001B UltraAV standard port--> Dell displayPort cable--> U2711 displayPort

Thanks Chris.

With VGA you are correct, it will go up to 2048x1152. That's unfortunate.

I have ordered a new Retina display Mackbook Pro. I read the max resolution should be available using the display port cable with a mini display port adapter?

Sorry Chris,

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is the difference between:

Accell B112B-001B UltraAV mini displayport

and

Accell B112B-001B UltraAV standard port

?

it seems you've listed both, and I thought it would simple be, From the Apple MBP, you would plug in the 'Acceil mini displayPort' and into this would plug the standard Dell displayPort cable which will then also plug into the U2711 displayPort.

Both ends of the Dell cable are standard sized, it will not fit into the apple mini displayport.

Thanks Chris.

What is the need for the Accell B112B-001B UltraAV standard port?

I thought it would just go from the MBP to the Mini DisplayPort > Dell displayport cable > U2711 displayPort?

I am not following you. Did you click on the link to see the product? One end is male mini-displayport. The other end is the female standard displayport. So our displayport cable plugs into the monitor and the other end into the Accell female standard displayport. Then, you plug the Accell male mini-displayport into the port on the laptop.
