U2414H - Daisy chaining question

Trying to get  U2414H monitor purchased from Dell to daisy chain with MS Surface Pro 3 (8.1) (all updates done). Driver to the monitor is also downloaded and installed.

Have miniDP from Surface Pro 3 dock to DP (in) of U2414H then DP (out) to DVI on 3rd screen.

I enabled DP 1.2 on the Dell and I can extend screens from the Surface to the U2414H just fine.

I clicked on 'detect' to see if it will detect the screen which is attached via DP to DVI cable and it ONLY gives the option to connect via VGA.

I could go buy a DP to VGA cable and hope it would work with that, but why won't the options give a DVI choice? If this should be possible, please let me know what to do to get that choice.

Thanks,

Katrina

Update: Ordered another U2414H monitor but none of the cables that come with it worked. I had to order a DP to DP cable to connect the two monitors. Used DPout  to DPin and it works great now.

I'm not an expert but I think daisy chaining will only work if all the connections are via DisplayPort.

Third screen has to be DP 1.2 in order to daisy chain.  Can't use VGA, DVI, or HDMI.  Can't use older versions of DP, AFAIK.

Certainly the first monitor acting as the hub must be DP 1.2, but I think older versions of DP will (at least sometimes) work for the last monitor in the chain, because it works for me with DP 1.2 not turned on on my U2413.

Thank you everyone for your advice.  We will ditch the monitor with VGA connection and get another U2414H monitor.

Was the mDP to DP cable that shipped with the U2414H defective?

Chris,  I don't know if it was defective. When I connected it with the miniDP to DP cable, the 2nd monitor  flashed a notice saying something about nothing being connected to the Display Port on that monitor and it would shut down in 5 minutes. I can't remember the exact wording now.  So I figured it was not getting a signal from the miniDP and would only connect to the 2nd monitor via the full size DPout port which was not included in the delivery. I do think Dell should provide a DP to DP cable with this monitor. Hope that helps.
