I have tried with a hi-speed HDMI cable and that didn't do better than 2048x1152.
* The Dell AMD 5670 does not support HDMI version 1.4 which is required for 2560x1440 60Hz. So 2048x1152 60Hz is the maximum.

I also connected a white DVI cable to the card and then connected to the monitor by using an adapter that went from a female DVI to a male DisplayPort plug.
* You need to purchase a converter like this =
Video card DVI out --> DVI to mDP converter --> Dell mDP to DP cable --> Monitor DP in

how do i tell if my DVI output is dual-link?
* The Dell Ati Radeon HD 5670 has a DVI-I Dual Link connector.

Thanks, Chris. Though it seems like your suggesting buying a converter that sells for for over $200. Seems easier to get a new video card that will work with my power supply and get me a DP port.

And I think you're also saying that even tho the DVI port is dual link, just connecting it via an adapter WITHOUT a converter won't get me 2560 res. Correct?

Do you know if a Radeon R9 270 works with my machine? I have the power supply that came with this unit. I think 525w, but not sure if I have the connector this card might need.

I notice you keep calling it a "Dell" Radeon 5670. I didn't know I wasn't getting a "real" Radeon 5670 when I bought this unit. I see I'm not the first person fooled by this. Does this card support 2560 or not?

* Agreed. But that is a different line of question. I was answering why the adapter you bought was not working.

* Correct.

* The Studio XPS 9100 has one PCIe x16 slot for a video card. Correct. It has a 525w power supply. AMD recommends a minimum 500w power supply. Will it work? Unknown. We never tested it.

I notice you keep calling it a "Dell" Radeon 5670. I didn't know I wasn't getting a "real" Radeon 5670 when I bought this unit. I see I'm not the first person fooled by this.
* All of our vendors (AMD, Nvidia, Creative Labs, etc.)  make customized hardware for us and others. For example, the MSI R9 270 could be different than the Sapphire R9 270 or the Asus R9 270. AMD has a base design that is then changed per the buyers (Dell, MSI, Sapphire, Asus) instructons.

Does this card support 2560 or not?
* The DVI port does. But we only tested it to DVI on a monitor.

Chris,

The Radeon R9 270 I might get requires a 6-pin power connector.  Will my Studio 9100 accommodate that? I know it will fit in the slot, but it seems that this card requires a direct power connection beyond via a plug and cable in the box, if I'm reading this correctly.Thank you!

You will need to power off, open up the tower (look for "Removing the Computer Cover") and follow all of the cabling from the power supply to see all of the existing 6-pin power connector. Ones not used will have black rubber caps on the end.
