U2717D, HDMI, 1080 maximum resolution

I just purchased a U2717D with a max resolution of 2560x1440 (QHD).  My video card is older, but has HDMI output and can support this resolution per published specifications. When I connect my CPU to the U2717D via HDMI, 1080P is the highest resolution that is available in Display Settings. I ordered a new HDMI high speed cable. What is the most likely culprit? Is there a limitation set to the HDMI input resolution on the monitor? Can I specify a custom display resolution setting and expect that to work over HDMI?

The U2717D HDMI is version 1.4. What version of HDMI is on that video card?
What PC model?
What video card?
What operating system?
