U2720Q, MacBook Pro M1 2021, USB Type-C problems

I have the new M1 MacBook Pro 14" with the M1 Max chip. When trying to use the USB Type-C cable for video, charging, and data it provides a very intermittent signal. It will take many instances of turning the monitor and laptop off, power cycling, plugging and unplugging cables until I get a signal. This signal lasts for about 20/30 minutes max then cuts out with no explanation. I'm using the cable provided by Dell. I have tried all ports on the laptop. I have the most recent drivers installed. I have tried another high wattage USB Type-C cable from Belkin.

I have come across this post on the Apple forums saying the monitor's power USB Type-C port is faulty, can anyone here speak to that claim?

Thanks.

@apspencer  I’ve seen a variety of reports here about problems with macOS Monterey systems and Dell USB-C displays, including loss of USB data connectivity over the USB-C link. For people with systems that were originally running a previous OS, the issue occurred with the update and goes away if the system is rolled back. But the 2021 MBP can’t run anything older than Monterey. It’s not clear whose “fault” the issues are or who would be able to implement a fix/workaround since to my knowledge underlying cause hasn’t been identified.

But on the off chance that these problems have you considering a different display, fyi a 27” 4K display is a rather poor choice for a Mac, for reasons I described in the post marked as the answer in this thread. So you might want to consider a display with different specs at that point.

USB-A (particularly USB 2.0) through USB-C is a tricky beast, your cable has to support it. Has to include additional 4 wires specifically for USB 2.0. I have no clue how you can find out if the cable you see in a shop has it or not.

The original Dell cable supplied with the U2720Q has these wires.

I had "flickering" problem with my M1, I thought it was the cable. I bought Baseus, Hama cables (high-end ones) but they don't seem to include the needed wiring.
So I lost USB-A functionality and the flickering wasn't gone completely either

I upgraded my Big Sur a couple of times, I think the newest update might have solved the problem, the flickering is gone (knock on hard wood...)

Now I went back to the original Dell cable, USB-A is back and the world is just beautiful.
