I currently have a Lattitude D505 that I connect to an LCD external monitor when I work in the office. I use a 1280x1024 resolution with the monitor. I am looking at buying a new D630 with WXGA+. It is important that I at least maintain my current resolution using my monitor. I know that WXGA+ is a widescreen resolution and the native resolution is 1440x900. Is this the same resolution I will see on my external monitor?
The video card will run at the lowest common denominator for the internal LCD and external monitor. If your external monitor won’t handle more than 1280x1024, that’s what the LCD will step down to when everything’s connected. If your external monitor can handle higher rez, you can step it up to match the LCD.

Will that make all the text appear really big like some of my colleagues' screens?
That depends on how you adjust the resolution. 1440x900 at 96dpi is, to my bifocaled eyes, unacceptably tiny. I won’t run any more than 1280x1024, not if it was ever so.
