The monitor sounds like it cannot support the resolution that the video card is set to. Try going into safe mode and lowering the resolution or connect the other monitor back,lower the resolution and the connect the other monitor.
Yes, if you have a smaller monitor that only supports certain resolutions and a video card that supports higher resolutions than the monitor can handle then, you will get that message. It is common.
