EMC Technical Advisory - ETA esg109074: NetWorker: Support for Disaster Recovery of Windows 2008
EMC issues Technical Advisories (ETA) to communicate information to customers. ETAs are articles that address critical problems that:
- Cannot be prevented or controlled by our proactive tools and processes.
- Cause unexpected behaviour or any kind of data loss.
Please read and utilize the information in this ETA to avoid any situation that might arise from the problem(s) described in it. Please note we update ETAs when new information becomes available. If you have questions regarding this advisory, please contact EMC Technical Support.
Product:
EMC NetWorker Client v7.4SP2 or later running on all Windows Server 2008 operating systems
EMC NetWorker Client v7.5.x or later running on all Windows Server 2008 operating systems
EMC NetWorker Client v7.6 or later running on all Windows Server 2008 operating systems
Note: The issue does not impact the NetWorker Client support for other versions of Windows including Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Issue:
Disaster recovery of Windows 2008 servers using Networker client may fail, when recovery is performed after doing a fresh Install of the operating system
Microsoft does not support performing system state recovery to a different OS instance than the original, i.e. you cannot perform a disaster recovery from a backup, after performing a new OS install. Recovery of system state is supported only to the Original OS instance. In scenario where the OS is corrupt either due to a hardware failure or software corruption, the only supported method of recovery is to perform a bare metal recovery. As Networker client currently does not support a bare metal recovery for Windows 2008, customers will need to generate a recoverable system state of their Windows 2008 servers using Windows Server Backup to enable them to perform a disaster recovery of their Windows 2008 servers in the event of a failure which leaves the system unbootable and a recovery from a backup is required.
For more information on Microsoft's support statements for Windows Server 2008 system state recoveries, including the supported/non-supported scenarios and recommendations for various recovery scenarios for windows machines see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694.
Existing EMC NetWorker releases provide online system state recoveries for all versions of Windows, including Windows Server 2008 (only for same OS instance). Windows system state online recoveries for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 follow Microsoft guidelines and are supported by NetWorker, including DR scenarios to the same or identical hardware with a fresh install of the operating system.
