OptiPlex 3020 MT CPU fan replacement.
Hi guys,
My trusty old 3020's cpu fan is starting to make a bit of noise and I'd like to replace it.
Will any 1150 heatsink fit alright or are there special considerations?
Thanks in advance!

Dell LGA1155 heatsink uses M3 screw to be mounted on a threaded backplate fastened to backside of 3020 MT motherboard. You cannot use (1) intel reference heatsink which is a push on type without screws or (2) aftermarket heatsink that has custom backplate. To replace the dell heatsink using a non-Dell option, you need to find a cooler that uses same M3 screw and same mounting mechanism.
it would be much easier to just replace the cooler with a standard Dell heatsink fan assembly for LGA115#.
Example of heatsink that works like Dell. just make sure it is M3 screw.
otoh you have the option to replace the Dell fan only while keep using the Dell heatsink. That may be a less involved repair project. The fan can usually be removed from heatsink by loosening some small screws.

Thanks mate! I know what I'm looking for now - might be just easier to replace the fan, as you say

@slipd
Cooler-Master-i30 B07QQXCVVR might work HOWEVER
Optiplex 3010 3020 7010 7020 9010 9020 MT FAN X3JDD uses non standard 5 pin connector. You can remove the fan from a working unit and replace OR get a Pocaton B073XJV5L9 for the fan and use standard fan. HOWEVER tests will fail using non dell fans because the dell fan goes up to 4500 rpm and standard fans are usually limited to 2000 rpm or less.

Hi @slipd,
Chances are your heatsink is thicker than the one photoed above.

@redxps630 Can we add a custom 92mm fan to replace the oem cpu fan? or must it be a dell only cpu fan.

it would be more complicated to use a 4 pin to Dell 5 pin 4 wire adapter. plus the Dell fan rpm and custom fan may be different, resulting in possible start up bios error if bios detects a fan rpm outside "normal limit". sometimes a non oem fan may get too loud b/c mobo makes it turn at higher rpm that what it is designed to do.

Besides what redxps said, I think the fan is 80mm, not 92mm. You can always measure to make sure.
