A fabric mismatch detected on I/O module ?

Hi

I have dell e1000 with 2 iom blade m6220 no stacking, the cmc version is 3.21 , and both m6220 version is 2.2. 0.3 . Recently i tried to upgrade m6220 firmware to 3.1.2.5 to A2, but after restart i got error "A fabric mismatch detected on I/O module A2" . I try to racdm connect switch-2 but doest respond. Does this mean both m6220 must have the same version ? or can i remove IOM A1 and insert A2 and then hopefully i can remote A2 and do downgrade ?

Thx

Hi Ibrahim.lubis,

Try to disconnect the A1 switch and then reseat the A2 switch and see if it starts responding. It is not recommended to backflash the firmware to the previous version, and if you can get this switch working, you should update the other one to match. Is there a reason why you are not installing the latest switch firmware 5.1.1.7? http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER01618993M/1/PCM6220v5.1.1.7a34.zip

If the switch is still not accessible you may need to do a recovery on the switch, which is outlined on page 18 of the release notes document that is in the zip file in the link.

If you activated image 2 then image 1 should be the backup image and you should be able to delete it. page 91 ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-m1000e_User's%20Guide12_en-us.pdf

I try to update the system slowly, its 3 year not maintaned. The reason i downgraded is Im afraid/not sure if i update the other IOM(A1) i will get the same error. Is the reason for this erorr is just because i dont upgrede the other IOM(A1) ? Can i upgrade directly to 5.1.1.7 from 2.2.0.3 ?

Thx

Yes the latest version instructions include how to go from version 2.x.x.x to 5.1.1.7, so as long as you follow those instructions you should not have an issue. You will need to update the boot code as well, did you update the boot code going to 3.1.2.5? The fabric mismatch error could be because of the different firmware versions, but you should be able to access the console still. Did you try the steps of pulling A1 and reseating A2 and seeing if it is accessible?

i will do it tonight, I remember i'm doing upgrade to 3.1.2.5 from 2.2.x.x using web gui, i upload to IOM and change the active image, i think i didnt do the update boot code, i just recycle the switch, did it automate boot code if i recylce it ? I have USB to Serial Cable but the serial cable is the female cable not male. Can i connect it using serial(male) to serial(male) and then connect it to PC ?

Thx

i can bring up the failed iom module A2 after remove A1, and i already upgrade both iom to 5.1.1.7 and no problem so far. One last question in both IOM the image1 is still the old firmware(2.2.0.3) how do i copy image2(5.1.1.7)  to image1(2.2.0.3) so have the same firmware ?

thx

recycling the switch after the upgrade won't automate the boot code update, however the GUI update does more automatically.

That cable should work to convert the connectors to the right type.
