11b, Fragmentation from 4096 to 2048, RTS threshold 4096 to 2048

Among the graduate students for whom I provide technical support, one reported that the wireless connection was sporadic and not reliable. I changed the control from LinkSys utility to Windows and then got into an advance section of Hardware (Device manager) in Windows XP Home, looked at some settings and decided to try changing some:

2048 "Fragmentation" from 4096
MODE4x ON (unchanged)
11b Network Type (was 11g)
Power mode (Continuous, unchanged)
2048 "RTS threshold" from 4096

Other than selecting 11g, what effect should these changes have?
Are there better settings than the two (original and what I selected)?
If I change the 2048 (twice) back to 4096 should I expect unchanged behavior or back to the original problem?

We have multiple access points, Aironet 1100, unmanaged (Infrastructure)

On a whim, I changed those two numbers to 2048 here as well and now, suddenly, it is working. I also removed every configuration that pertained to our school campus and created just one with the proper and accurate 128-bit WEP KEY. I noticed that in this software, when I try to re-introduce the correct value for the key, it tells me that this one has already been configured and I need to change the name or remove it.
Since someone else set up the configurations and apparently had incorrect information for the key value, I just removed every one and when I started all over with the correct KEY it is now able to connect. My actions are documented as follows:

I was eager to apply my new found knowledge, so I tackled an INSPIRON 5100 with Truemobile; however, the hardware settings in this one were much more extensive.
I did not find a place to specify 11b (rather than 11g); however, there are settings for Fragmentation (2346) and RTS Threshold (2347). I noted those two but did not change either. My intention is to document all the settings because this Inspiron needs help big time to connect to our infrastructure (we have a total of ten access points in three different buildings. In two of the buildings, we have access points on three levels. There are dozens of students using WiFi with little or no problem continually.
