.11b vs .11g?

I know that 802.11g is much faster than the older 802.11b standard.  But if the main function of my home network is just to share cable internet access and the occasional small document to another printer, is there any real advantage?

many thanks,

No, there is not any real advantage to the faster 802.11g.  Your cable internet runs at a maximum of about 3 Mbps, which is still slower than 802.11b and I doubt you would notice much difference if all you are doing is transferring small files between the computers.  Still, the price of 802.11g devices has dropped considerably and you might want to consider it as an investment in the future if you ever thing you will doing more file transfers or transferring larger files.

Right now a lot of companies are also putting their older tech on deep discounts just to move them out.  So, pony up for the newest, or jump on the bargains?  Decisions, decisions.

thanks for your response,

For at least 5 to 6 years, no present wirless card will outpace any current ISP speed so the best bet is to jump on the bargains.  802.11b is a tremendous bargain right now and true the G standard is faster but only on an internal basis and just slighly more powerful, but for 99.9% of home users, the 802.11b cards are just fine and secure when setup correctly.
