I installed the BCM 3.5.25.0 (date: 8/27/2003) driver from WindowsUpdate primarily because I wanted some way to change the default setting on the popup window (I want the computer to automatically answer so calls come through, rather than default to "ignore.") There are NO new options, so I am very disappointed. The driver works fine, however. I see no difference between it and 3.5.24.0
I have v.92 MOH working fine even with my ISP's v.90 modems (of course you have to drop the net connection if you answer, but calls come thorugh). However, I REALLY want choices for 3 options in the BCM driver. I want a call log, so I can see if I missed a call. I want the option to answer automatically after a set time, rather than ignore. I want to be able to choose a wav file so it sounds like a phone call. The BCM driver (both 3.5.25.0 and 3.5.24.0) have NO options at all. The BVRP software had these options (see http://www.bvrp.com/ENG/oem/DiagnosticsUtilities/ModemonHold/feature.asp) . This just ticks me off! It all works, but there are no options at all. It's like having a great sports car that is set at 60mph all the time.
I went into the registry and searched for "broadcom" which did show some software options for MOH, (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BCMSM\Modem) but only the "MOHIgnoreTimeout" seems obvious enough to mess with. Dell or Broadcom should publish something on the options if this is going to be our only way of setting user preferences.
This pages lists a lot of MOH utilities: http://www.totalshareware.com/ASP/list_view.asp?catid=162&Page=1 - The "IDentify! Version 4.0" program looks pretty good. It offers a log, but I'm not sure if it will default to answering versus ignoring the call. If anyone tries this program let me know that you think. The "talking caller ID" would be really cool (note you must already have an appropriate text-to-speech synthesizer - www.textaloudmp3.com is great, but I haven't tried it with IDentify yet.
Thanks... i was wondering if it was different, now I know. Things work well enough as they are (sounds like better than many people...), so I'll leave it be.
Here's an update on the IDentify! shareware program.
THE GOOD:
It's a great program.
It verbally tells you who is calling, and I already have the AT&T voices from www.TextAloudMP3.com (these are VERY human sounding voices).
It also keeps a log of the callers, and has a great pop-up window.
It works just fine with the newest BCM drivers that I received from Microsoft. This may actually be the reason for the new version of BCM drivers because they are MS certified and they support many standards such as TAPI - I know this existed before, but it probably helps that MS verified the drivers for compatibility.
THE BAD:
It only works for non-call-waiting calls. So, if you are online, it doesn't grab the Modem-On-Hold data and keep a record of those calls.
Likewise, it has no features at this time for any Modem-On-Hold options such as "automatically answer MOH calls."
OVERALL: This program is pretty worthwhile if you want to keep a computer log of incoming calls OR if you want to block certain calls (has a bunch of features for that) OR if you want talking caller ID (they have a Microsoft Text-to-Speech you can download if you do not yet have one.) Hopefully the author will include MOH options in the future.
