BLUE SCREEN CRASH - Bad Pool Caller

Spec:  P4 2.53 Ghz, 512 RAM, 30Gb HD, XP Home, Generic Soft 56K Modem, DVD-RW

Hi,

My Dell 4550 has been working great recently and I was really happy until I shut it down and unplugged it last night to dust off .  Then when I plugged it back in it said it had found new hardware (USB MidiMan 2x2) which has been installed and working for ages now.  So, I re-installed the driver for that like it asked and that went fine.  However, problems came when I went to connect to the net.  The dreaded blue screen appeared and I got this error:

A Problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.             BAD POOL CALLER. Stop: 0x000000c2                                                                                                                       If this is the first time you have seen this screen check any new hardware or software is installed correctly.  If problems continue disable or removed any new hardware or software.  Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.  If you need to use Safe Mode press F8 on start-up.

So, first off I removed the Midiman 2x2 drivers and re-booted.  Then gave the internet a shot again.  Blue screen again.  So, I gave system restore a shot.  No luck, tried system restore to another restore point - no luck.  Every time I try to dial-up it crashes with the same error.  So, by this point I am thinking - mabye before I shut down the computer to unplug & dust I should have chosen to Stop the Hardware device from the sys tray.  Seeems stupid cos the computer was off when I uplugged so the hardware was already stopped.  Anyway - so now I think by not stopping the hardware I have somehow corrupted the modem driver.  So - ok I went into Device Manager and selected properties of the Modem driver and it crashed again.  So I have narrowed down the problem to the Modem - either the hardware is now damaged or the driver is corrupted.  After re-booting again in device manager this time I have tried to update the driver but it says that the best driver is the one currently being used.  I disabled the modem driver from device manager which enabled me to view the properties of it and see there are no conflicts.  So I un-installed the driver and re-booted the machine and it sensed the modem and auto-installed the best driver.  However, now I am back at square one.  If I try to dial up the Blue screen appears and Windows closes.

Please help someone - I really need to get my e-mails and my web site is sitting unattended and it desperately needs some work.  I cant afford to send the machine away and lose time.   Thanks very much i'm sure this one will challenge u!

I have the same problem but with a Motorola 4200 Surfboard Cable Modem. I have reinstalled the driver several times and check the ipconfig in the command window everything appears to be okay. When I start up explorer the system crashes straightaway or after a few seconds resulting in the blue screen of death and  a memory dump and the Bad_Pool_Caller message. The modem never gave me any problems on my previous machine with windows 98. So much for XP beng more robust :( If anyone has any idea how to fix this I am open to suggestions ?

I just got an 8300 and tried to hook up my Motorola Surfboard 4200.  Same problems that others are having with the stupid blue screen and the BAD_POOL error!  The SB 4200 worked awesome with my old Gateway and Windows XP Pro.  But now, as soon as I open IE, my new system crashes and here I sit back in front of the Gateway.  Is this strictly a USB port issue or is it the Motorola SB?  I installed the most current drivers from Motorola and I was able to use IE for a very short time and then the crash again.

CaptainR6,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

A bad pool stop error could be defective hardware or bad drivers or a loaded service is not working correctly.  Try the steps listed in the following Microsoft article:

i own a precision m60 and and have had the bad pool caller problem for 2 months till i was able to get a clue to my problem

tried all the things with driverupdates and so on - nothing worked

then i by chance i found a interpretation the my error message - "...tried to free... where was already free.."

so looked for registration entries from utilities like tweak-xp and found my solution

it's the key which says "always unlload dll" - deactivated it and - wooops - i'm on the road again - work is fun again

i think there's a timing problem with dma-transfers while unloading dll's which caused in my case the bad_pool_caller

so maybe it can help you also - here's the key which must be set to 0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"AlwaysUnloadDLL"="0"

I had the same problem. i dont recall you mentioning if you were using the usb part of your sb4200 modem. If you are, my solution was to buy an ethernet cable (CAT6) fortunately i have a asus p4c800E deluxe board which has a lan already. if you dont have an ethernet card purching one and a cable is much cheaper than a new modem. oh and i had the latest drivers installed for my surfboard. which is curently at 2.1 still did not work but now im happy and surfing good luck.

I was finally able to get the Motorola SB 4200 working by using the ethernet cable instead of the USB.  Additional problem though was that the ethernet cable didn't work right away either.  I had to try several different types of installs.  I got it to finally work after I completly removed a traces of the previous install attempts and then did the install proceder in a precise sequence.  Works now just as well as it ever has.

Thanks for the help people.

I resolved the problem by switching from the USB to an Ethernet connection. I phoned my cable company Comcast and their tech support walked me through the install process in about 5 minutes. Connection has worked fine since then.
