Can ping ip address but unable to connect using web browser
I have a 8200 run on a home network, I use cable for internet. I run all 4 of my machines on cat5 wire. Today for some unknown reason my laptop will not connect to any of the machines and is unable to connect to the internet. I ran a diagnostic on the card and even re-installed the driver all machine indications are that the card is good. Using a command prompt I can ping ip addresses, but to try and ping a www.address I receive unable to complete ping. Anyone have any idea what I did, or it did to make this happen? Have I corrupted one of the network xp files somehow? Or is it just a simple config in my software. Using tools in IE, under connection it is all as it was, do not use dial up checked, automatic detection, and the Lan area is blank as it is supposed to be. I have connected the machine to all 3 of the other cat5 connects and even tried plugging directly into the cable modem but no go. help....

Steve,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
can you attach to an IP address[, like that for Dell.com]? Go to a DOS prompt and type:
If you receive a response, then your DNS is down. You should contact your ISP for additional troubleshooting ideas.

Thanks much for the input guys, finally got frustrated and purchase a cable router. I was previously using my old 3com 4hub and just running the cable in the hub with the puters. It seems to have been the problem, all the machines were set for auto dns/ip and without a proxy I dont think it was going well. Think my problem was trying to log 2 machines on to my cable account with out the proxy, cable wont allow it.. (my guess).. but with the router all is well and she is once again screeming along.
Thanks again..
