Cannot detect network using cross-cable

I have an Inspiron 8500 and an Inspiron 8200. When I connect the I8500 to my router using the cross-cable I get a connection just fine. When I try to connect the I8200 to the router using the same cross-cable, the laptop does not even detect a connection. I checked the connection properties on both laptops and the same network components are installed on both. Any ideas as to what settings I should search for to get the connection to work on my I8200?

Cross over cables are used to make direct connection between two computers and not going thur a router.  No explanation as to why one is working an one is not, but get a regular CAT5 cable and everything should be just fine.

Thats very strange - you shouldn't get any connection to a router using a cross over cable - only with a standard cable.

F W I W, my D-Link (DI-614+ and DSS-5+ (granted a switch)) equipment autosense and will work with either a straight or crossover cable.  Not trying to obfusticate....   (    I always felt that word is an oxymoron!)
