Change of IP Address & Gateway on XPS M1710 fails to connect to Interenet

My XPS M1710 with XP SP2 has worked faultlessly for 12 months over our wireless network. I want to add a Yoggie Gatekeeper SOHO firewall onto the router.  The Yoggie becomes the gateway and also becomes the DHCP server, instead of the router.  The other PCs are ok with this and work properly.   However the M1710 although renewing the network addresses refuses to connect to the internet and cannot ping any other device on the network - although they can ping it!  Ipconfig /all, ARP, and Netstat all give correct results. I can't think where else to look, but it is obviously a problem with the XPS.  The original IPA/Gateway are in the 192.168.2.x range, and the new ones are 192.168.4.x.  Any help would be appreciated.

Everything looks good except for the lease time period.  Why are these set for 10 minutes?  Normally a SOHO router will give IP addresses for a 24 hour time period.

The lease time at this point is not from the router which gives a 1 year period, but from the Yoggie over which I have no control.  I have contacted Yoggie support for an answer to your question and will post the information when I have it.

For completeness sake I include a copy of ipconfig for the M1710 in it's working state (i.e. without the Yoggie connected) :-

        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
        DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : jdhome

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

This looks okay wxceptr I think you typed the Lease Obtained and Expires infor in backwards.

Why do you feel it is necessary to have this other gateway involved?  My guess is that you will need to disable the DHCP server on the present router in order to use that other device.

Have a look at www.Yoggie.com - it  acts as a firewall and web security device.  With up to 5 pcs to secure it works out a lot cheaper than multiple Norton licences, and works for me except for this Dell XPS.  It provides the DHCP service, and the DHCP server is switched off in the router, and as I said,  the other units connect to the internet without a problem when the Yoggie is in the loop.  As it is an ALL or Nothing case, I need to get the M1710 running with the Yoggie.  Regards the typing of the Lease info - they were cut and pasted, but they refer to different years, with the expiry being 2008.

The first 2 IPconfigs in the earlier posting are /all from a working unit and the m1710 both with the Yoggie in place.  They are the ones with the 10 min lease times, and the M1710 being the one with the Intel 3945 wireless hardware.

Can I see an ipconfig /all with the Yoggie in place?

August 30th, 2007 09:00

I have had a reply about lease times from ythe Yoggie support desk - here it is :

I have asked our engineers, and our DHCP is in fact configured to give a 10 minutes lease time.
It a reasonable lease time which provides easier DHCP management for our products and helps keep the IP database small.
This factor should not have any influence on the connectivity.
If we'll recognize a problem with this issue in the future, it will added to the features of our products.
