Computer Says Conected to ISP, But Will Not Open a Web Page
I have XP Pro running and had SP1 and was able to connect to a wireless access point in the complex I live in. I then downloaded sp2 and everything seemed fine, although the connection was weak and slow. I ordered cable internet service for my unit and tried to connect. I kept getting "cannot find server, or dns error" messages. This was now on either the hardwired or wireless connection. I loaded no programs for this isp. After I went back and could now not connect via wireless, I uninstalled sp2 thinking something in there may be the problem. That did not cure the problem. I went thru tech support for the isp and they say their signal is good and they pinged my computer and went through a few settings with me. They say everything looks good. I have went through the settings like a million times, but am having no luck. I could at least get on the wireless connection previously, but now, not even that. My computer is saying it is connected, but will not open either IE or Mozilla browser. McAfee firewall is disabled as well as Windows firewall is not selected. I think it has something to do with the ip address or the like. I cannot get a reply when pinging an outside source at the command prompt.
I have also gone through some reloads of IE and reset the TCP/IP stack, but nothing is curing the problem. Windows XP does seem to load slowly and IE takes forever to load.
Thanks - Troy

Note that if you are changing the connection to modem between a computer and a router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem (either the router or the computer), then turn on any other computers that will connect through the router.
