Couldn't connect to secure sites using AOL DSL with Linksys router
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem, but I thought I'd post this just in case.
For the past few months, I have been bounced back and forth between Linksys support and AOL support because I was unable to go to secure sites when connected through a Linksys BEFSR41 router using AOL DSL.
I had been instructed to go to Microsoft and download all the current Windows upgrades for all the computers on the network, I installed the most recent version of AOL on all computers, I spent countless hours on the phone with tech support pinging this and that, configuring and reconfiguring, etc.
Today, I finally figured it out myself. On the router setup screen, the internet connection type for AOL should be PPPoE. The user name should be the AOL master screen name. The password should be the AOL password for the master screen name.
A few months ago, I changed my AOL password for the master screen name but didn't realize I also had to update it in the router setup screen.
When I changed my password, I kept getting disconnected from AOL. To keep me from being disconnected, Linksys had me change the user name to a generic "America Online." This enabled me to stay connected, but I couldn't visit secure sites.
Today, I changed the screen name back to my AOL master screen name and entered my current AOL password, and now I can go everywhere again.
Next time I change my password, I will be sure to update it in the router setup screen. What a simple solution to months of wasted time and aggravation!
