DRIVER FOR DSL

I RECENTLY GOT DSL THRU AT&T AND WHEN I WENT TO CONNECT IT'S NOT RECOGNIZING THE MODEM. I CALLED CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND WHEN WE WENT INTO CONNECTIONS THERE WAS NO LOCAL AREA CONNECTION. HE SAID I NEEDED A DRIVER FOR IT. I LOOKED TO DOWN LOAD THE  DRIVER BUT THERE ARE SO MANY HOW DO I KNOW WHICH ONE I NEED?

 MAILL8Y,

Typing in all caps is consider shouting, and it's also hard to read..

DSL should not need a driver as your conection is as soon as you login.

Your setup should be...

Wall > ISP modem/router > wireless router(if any) > wired/wireless

All devices, phones, answering machines, faxes, etc..., need a DSL Filter except the DSL Modem.

You may share a DSL Filter

Wall > dsl filter > splitter > multiple devices

You should have an ethernet cable going from your computer to the wireless router(if any)/dsl modem. This should be connected with the computer shut down, then start up the computer.

Your computer should have an ethernet adapetr(card installed) It will look like a phone jack but larger. If you have installed the ethernet card, you should have installled the drivers before attaching the card to the computer.

If you have a DSL modem from Verizon, it is usually a modem and a router in one. You connect to it either through USB or through Ethernet port. The modem on your PC if you have one is a dial-up modem and has nothing to do with this.

 MAILL8Y,

The only thing you should need to do is open your browser. It should already be connected to the internet.

I'm sorry but I was kind of shouting!  I know you hate dealing with people that are computer stupid and I can get into my connections and all of that but I can't even find where the modem is even on my computer.  I turned it off and turned it back  on and where the ethernet cable is plugged in it is lit up. The only connection I am showing is my  verizon wireless box that I have been using for the internet. Shouldn't it atleast be in my computer or in my programs if it's been recognized and is installed on my computer?

Thanks!

Maillby,

Wait a minute.  You said your DSL was from AT&T and your Ethernet LAN connection light was on but all you see is your Verizon Mi-Fi connection. Your LAN connection may be disabled.  If you are using that new AT&T installation wizard, it can be a booger to get connected.  What version of Windows are you using; XP or Vista?

I tried that and it says internet explorer can not display this page. I dont have dsl thru verizon its that little box you plug into a usb pert. I called at&t support and he said that it had a connection but my computer wasn't recognizing it that it was a driver issue. My verizon is still installed because it's my only internet connection I have until I get the at&t running. Should there not be some sort of installation hardware for the modem?

MAILL8Y,

Do you have one of THESE?

If so, some things come with installation disks and some don't.

Shut down your computer. Attach the USB adapter to the USB Port (Make sure it is marked USB Port. My computer has another port on the side and sometimes I accidentally try to put my flash drive in there and it doesn't work)

With the adapter in place, Start your computer. Log in to an unrestricted account.

Now try to connect.

What happens?

If you're still not connecting, you might have to contact ATT to find out the reason why. The adapter needs to be activated before it's installed or it will not work.

That's like what I have thru Verizon now.  My modem from AT&T is a 2wire gateway.  I don't know how to put a pic on here or I would upload it.  Do you have an email address that I could send you pictures to?  Do you think that the Verizon usb still being installed could have something to do with it?

Maill8y,

Not necessarily, but the USB MI-FI adapter cannot be plugged in while trying to connect to the AT&T DSL modem and its software cannot be in control of network connections.

You should have received an installation disk with the DSL modem.  The AT&T DSL modem will not connect to the Internet until you complete the registration of the modem and your account with AT&T.

You can check the modem setup as follows:  Open Internet Explorer.  Type http://192.168.1.254 in the address bar.  If your LAN connection is working you should see the modem setup page.  You can check to see if it is connected to AT&T with the Status button.  If you can access the Modem Setup, you can manually enter the user name and password assigned to you by AT&T.
