Are you seeing the lights on either side of the ethernet port showing any activity, either blinking or solid, when the network cable is plugged in and connected to the router?
Here is a link to the Dell Network & Wireless Support Center. You will find some good information, including troubleshooting steps, in that article that might be of help to you.
On the Dell Inspiron 2320 you should have a RealTek RTL8111E ethernet controller. That network card has lights on both side of the plug. The right side light, if it is blinking, represents network traffic passing through the card. The left side light represents the speed it is accessing. Steady orange equals 1000 Mb speeds, while steady green means 10/100 Mb speed.
Here is a link to the RealTek download page, and under the Windows category you will find a link to download their diagnostic tool. Try either downloading that on the 2320, or to another system and copy the file over, and see if the diagnostics report any hardware problems
Last thing I wanted to post was a link to the Dell Support main page. If you haven't yet, go to that page, input your service tag, and the system will refresh to take you to the support page for your system. Click on the Downloads & Drivers link, and then look under the Networking category. Download the newest driver and see if that helps at all.
Let me know if any of this helps or not. If not, we'll see what else we can do to help you.

You can also use the Windows 7 Network troubleshooting tool to see if it helps.
