I am incurring a very similar problem. I have not been able to login to the Dell Data Safe Server. I called the Dell cusmoter support (overseas) and they remotely logged into my computer and ran every scenario they could think of and basically determined it was either my server firewall or the Dell Server of which they had no information on since there are so many of them. They recommended that I install and login from home which I just did tonight....and guess what? Same error! So either there is something wrong with their server or my account!
Thankyou for your response; you are the second person to advise re this. I have had two issues. The one described above which did self correct; and a more recent problem where the backup completes prematurely with errors, error code LA1017 which is an error code that dell tech support were not familiar with! I am in the dark with the first problem. Re the second problem I wonder whether it is a timing out issue so I will try to keep the internet active with internet explorer during backups to see if this helps to assess the problem.
I installed and logged in from my laptop on my home network and still get the same error. So either there is something wrong with my account or my specific dell server where my account resides.
Today I updated my subscription, which I am not happy with as it is not working. Of course I got an email showing that it was renewed and my cc was charged. But that still did not fix my ability to log on. It was set to expire in a couple of weeks so I thought maybe it was related. I cannot access my account and still get the error "Unable to Connect to the Backup Server. Make sure you are connected to the internet and try again. If you are still experiencing problems refer to the help." Well the help is not addressing this problem and I am starting to lose my patience!
Okay, so I tried again from home to access the Dell Data Safe Server via my home wireless network and laptop and I was able to login and select files to restore. I will go into my office tomorrow and see if it will work on my office network. Hopefully this problem was on Dell's end, but I sure have a lot of troubleshooting time on my end trying to figure this all out!
I did a manual backup on my office network yesterday with success and also last night the automatic backup worked as well. It seems to me that the problem was on Dell's end. However, the only thing that I noticed was that my subscription was nearing its end. Once I was able to log on and renew my subscription, in a matter of about 24 hrs the system was working again.
On another note, my family and I just visited Lucca, Italy about a month ago and we had a wonderful trip!

Many thanks.
My subscription ends in more than two months so I think is not this one the problem.
Tonight I try again.
Now in Italy there is a lot of snow.
Ciao
