Dell E521 Windows 7 network issue

Question

I have a Dell 521 with a broadcom 440 network card. I loaded windows 7 on it over the weekend. Everything went fine until the network tried to pickup an IP address from my LAN. The card said it was working in device manager, but no IP address was active. When I tried running ipconfig, it told me that 'no network could be found.' I even uncheck IPV6 because my LAN doesn't support it. Gateway is 192.168.1.1. Should I have tried manually assigning an IP to see if that worked? I don't understand why DHCP wouldn't work.
