Dell Wireless WLAN Card Wireless Network Controller stopped working and was closed.

Hi all,

I regularly get this message (but not everytime) when I start up Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

"Dell Wireless WLAN Card Wireless Network Controller stopped working and was closed.

A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Then I get this following message:

"Solution Found: Address a problem with your WLAN card.

Your WLAN card has stopped working properly.

This is a network adapter that allows your computer to connect to a wireless network.

To find out if an updated version of your WLAN card is available, contact your device or computer manufacturer."

The strange thing is even though I get this message I am still able to connect to the internet via a wireless network. So there is no problem as such it is just annoying to keep getting this message when Windows starts up.

I have checked on the DELL Support website and I do have the most up-to-date driver already (Or I think I do).

The message refers to my:

Dell Inspiron 1520, Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card (with driver version 4.170.25.17)

Can anybody help!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Uday Salvi,

Please backup all the files and all the required information and software on external hard drive. You may contact a local tech for backing up the data from your computer.

Please follow the steps from this link to format the computer: http://dell.to/12JAKNN

Note: Restoring the computer to factory settings will delete all the data from the computer.

If the above steps do not help, we need to do a manual reinstallation of operating system and download the drivers accordingly.

Also, please private message me the service tag and registered owners name of the computer.

To private message, click my user name and click Start conversation.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Uday Salvi,

As you have all the discs that were shipped with the computer, I suggest you to follow the below mentioned steps to format the computer using the operating system discs:

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. Open the disc drive, insert the Windows Vista CD/DVD and close the drive.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. When prompted, open the Install Windows page by pressing any key to boot the computer from the CD/DVD.
  5. Note: If the Install Windows page doesn’t appear and the computer doesn’t boot from the CD/DVD, then try the following:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. To open the Boot menu, when you see the Dell logo, press the F12 key several times.
    3. On the Boot menu, click the CD/DVD drive (may appear as CDROM, CD/DVD or CD/DVD/CD-RW), and then press Enter.
  6. Under Vista Setup, select your preferred Language, Time, Currency and Keyboard Method, and then click Next.
  7. Click Install Now.
  8. Review the license terms, and click I accept the license terms to continue.
  9. Click Custom (advanced).
  10. Under “Where do you want to install Windows, select and delete all the partitions listed by selecting Drive options and Delete all the partitions listed.
  11. Ensure you have only one partition left, select that partition and select Format.
  12.  If the Primary Partition has 0GB free, select the line for Unallocated Space and then click Next.
  13. Note: Your computer will restart several times during the reinstall.
    1. Under Setup, type a username and password, and select a picture for your account.
    2. Use the default or recommended settings on the next few screens, and then click Next.
    3. Click to select your time zone, and then click Next.
    4. To finish the reinstall, click Start.
  14. When your Desktop screen appears, you are ready for the next step.
  15. Insert the Dell Resource CD/DVD (Drivers and Utilities disc).
  16. We recommend that you print the list of drivers below, so you can refer to the correct order as you install. Be sure to follow the order listed, as some devices may not work if drivers are installed in a different order.
  17. Install the drivers that match the components on your computer. Remember to follow the order below:

Plug in any network or modem cable, and connect to internet.

Please watch this Video to Format and Clean Install Windows Vista: http://bit.ly/11Fohse

Hope this helps!

Hi Uday Salvi,

Are you using a Wired or a Wireless internet connection?

Check in Device Manager if there are any alerts on the Network Adapters.

Procedure to navigate to device manager:

  1. Click “start”.
  2. Type “Device Manager” in the search box.
  3. Select “Device Manager “in the list.
  4. Click the “Network Adapters”.

If there are any alerts, install the Network card drivers from the Resource Dvd which was shipped along with the computer. Insert the Dell Resource CD/DVD in the computer (Drivers and Utilities Disc), select the system model and operating system from the left hand pane, select Networking and install the drivers for the appropriate Network card and WLAN card.

Please check and post the results.

I've been chasing this bug for donkey's years and have reached the conclusion that it will never be fixed as the machine and system are too old.  From reading the forum posts it is clear there is no solution.

as the WLAN card worked fine - never had any issues with it - I just ignore the Windows announcment that it is not working and get on with my life.

It is annoying these things don't get sorted, because if it was a genuine problem that stopped you working it is clear that Microsoft wouldn't care less!  The standard responce is "buy a new machine".  This is not sustainable - we throw too many computers away for no other reason than the software is no longer supported.
