Dell XPS M1530 Windows Vista reinstalled, network driver not working
Hi, I have had to replace the harddrive on my Dell XPS M1530 due to complete harddrive failure.
I have installed Windows Vista, and also installed all the Dell drivers. All of them seem to work correctly apart from the Ethernet controller driver and wireless adapter one. I have tried downloading the drivers from Dell website, but that won't install - it comes up with this message: "the device could not be detected. Installation aborted".
This means I can't connect to the internet, so using a friend's computer right now. Is there any driver that I can download to make this work?

Hi, thanks for all your suggestions. I tried looking at all possibilities in terms of manually installing the drivers, but nothing worked.
So, in the end I bought an external wi-fi USB stick and using that, I managed to connect to the internet. Once connected, the laptop must have then auto-downloaded the correct driver for the internal modem, because a couple of days later I managed to connect to the internet even without needing the external wi-fi stick.

At boot hit F2 when you see the Dell logo and enter setup.
While in the BIOS Setup Menu check and see if your network card is enabled. If not then enable it and try to install again.
Also check device manager in Windows and see if the network adapter is listed and is loaded correctly with no bangs and is enabled.
For your wireless card I believe FN F2 enables your wireless card.

I have tried your suggestions, but no success so far. The network card is not listed in the BIOS setup menu. Settings for the wireless are listed on there, but they were already enabled.
On the device manager, the network adapter is listed with a yellow exclamation mark - i.e. there's a problem with it. That's the only one that's causing a problem - all other drivers for the laptop are working fine.

Has anyone figured this out yet. Same issue for me. Hard drive crashed, I reinstalled everything (didn't pay attention to order though), and everything appears to be working except for my wireless. I've spent A LOT of time trying to figure it out. I've uninstalled the Network Controller and re-downloaded the driver from the Dell page but still can't get it to recognize the driver (it says there's a compatability issue with my version of Windows, which is Vista). Please advise.

Hi cbcaso,
Are you using the same system as mentioned in the title? If not, please share the exact system model in use.
If the Network Controller has a yellow bang in Device Manager then it points towards a driver issue. Please share the Hardware Id of the Network Controller in question. You may follow the steps below to check the Hardware Id :
Please reply with the findings. Will take it further from there.

Hi jarooty,
The Hardware ID you have shared appears to be of Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card. You may download/install the driver from Here if using Windows Vista operating system. If you are using Windows 7 operating system, you may try installing the driver in compatibility mode and see if it helps. You may follow the steps below to install the downloaded driver in compatibility mode :
Please reply if you have any further questions.

I solved this problem for my Windows 7 installation of a DW1530
Despite several attempts to use the installer script (.exe) with compatibility mode and admin execution it does not properly recognize the system.
The solution is to unpack the contents and the go to device manager and update the driver for the WLAN card by choosing the directory where the Win7 drivers have just been unpacked. This was met with success.
Apparently the installer has not been sufficiently updated to recognize a 64 bit Windows 7 installation and manage driver install correctly.
