Dell wireless 1390 WLAN Mini Card cannot connect to a wireless network

The Dell wireless 1390 WLAN Mini Card wireless card(Chipset BCM4311/BCM2050) is in a Dell Inspiron E1505(running Win XP with Service Pack 3).

The Dell Wireless WLAN card utility has a diagnostics option to check the card. I ran that and the hardware(wireless mini card) was
found to be OK. Updated the drivers which did not help so removed and reinstalled the drivers, but that too did not help. I tried using the
Windows wireless configuration utility(and disabled the Dell Wireless WLAN card utility), started the Wireless service, but
that did not help.

Then, tried the Dell Wireless WLAN card utility(after disabling the Windows wireless utility), but that was futile too. It cannot detect any wireless network
at all.

Followed suggestions of http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/p/17946577/18520047.aspx
but that did not fix the issue.

Checked each property at
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/wlan/en/UG_EN/props.htm#toc_65

There are no issues with acccess point. Next to the Dell Inspiron E1505 is a Dell latitude(having an Intel wireless card) which can connect
to the wireless network.

Also, when the computer boots there is a message "Notification dll
has not been registered program will not work correctly"

Followed the suggestions at
http://help.wugnet.com/windows/wireless-connection-service-wont-start-boot-ftopict628131.html

Opened a command prompt and typed

regsvr32 atl.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 wltrynt.dll [OK]
ipconfig /flushdns [OK]
ipconfig /renew [OK]
netsh winsock reset [OK]

Rebooted the machine, but still there is a message "Notification dll
has not been registered program will not work correctly"

What else can I try?

 p_S_92,

Go to device manager, network, 1390 adapter, advanced. Look for antenna diversity. I'm almost certain your adapter has this. Change it from Auto to Aux.

Then restart your computer and tell us what happens.

Also, did you try running WinSock XP Fix?

Rick,

Thanks for the suggestion.

However, I have already tried it. You may notice in my initial post I mentioned that I tried the suggestions at http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/p/17946577/18520047.aspx

which was what you suggested, but it did not work.

Running Winsock XP Fix would help if your registry entries or TCP/IP protocol stack is corrupted which in this case is not. Using wired Ethernet, the machine can connect fine. However, I will try that.

Rick,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Winsock fix did not fix the issue.

Thanks for the other links. Two of them apply to vista and this machine is running XP. I had already disabled the Dell Wireless Utility and tried XP wireless service and also tried vice-versa(as i mentioned in my initial post)

Followed the suggestions at http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/p/19241207/19780707.aspx#19780707
but that also could not fix the issue, though it updated the driver for the card.

The user recalls when he did not have wireless connectivity, he changed some properties in http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/wlan/en/UG_EN/props.htm#toc_65 and it started working. Then, he rebooted and it lost connectivity ever since then. He doesn't remember what he changed.

Thanks for your advice and time.

 p_S_92,

No system restore point made before the changes and/or after them?

What is seen in the device manager?

Was the ISP modem/router and the wireless router(if any) turned off for 30 seconds. Turn the isp modem/router on. Wait 15 seconds, then turn on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect. Did they try pressing Fn and F2, F2 or try a swithc on the side?

Is the wireless adapter enabled in the BIOS, device manager and the windows mobility center?

No

What is seen in the device manager?

The wireless card shown as working properly without any conflicts.

Was the ISP modem/router and the wireless router(if any) turned off for 30 seconds. Turn the isp modem/router on. Wait 15 seconds, then turn on the wireless router(if any)

I am in a area with wireless access point and that is working fine. Other computers can access the wireless network.

Restart the computer and try to connect. Did they try pressing Fn and F2, F2 or try a swithc on the side?

Did that, and Wi-Fi is enabled(there is a light for that bulb)

Is the wireless adapter enabled in the BIOS, device manager and the windows mobility center?

Yes, yes and yes.

Thanks for your continued suggestions. It appears I may have to open it and see if the aerial wire of the antenna is working or not?

 p_S_92,

Put the computer next to the router and see if it connects. If so, the it is possible the antenna wire came off.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Mac address filtering, ran out of ip address are the other guesses.

Rick,

Did not get you fully.

There is no router in our office. The access point is in another office(and not accessible to us). Do you mean the antenna wire could be off if it connects when near to the router else not?

We have DHCP for the wireless network and yes computers next to it can connect fine so i doubt it is running out of ip addresses.

There is no mac address filtering. To connect to the network we need to use our email credentials. Also, the network is unsecured wireless

Also, when the computer boots there is a message "Notification dll has not been registered program will not work correctly" though I don't understand why after I followed the suggestions at http://help.wugnet.com/windows/wireless-connection-service-wont-start-boot-ftopict628131.html

Any guesses what would be the right properties for http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/wlan/en/UG_EN/props.htm#toc_65

I tinkered it with enough, but that did not help. Why do you think I am getting the message "Notification dll has not been registered program will not work correctly"

Thanks for your continued support.

 p_S_92,

Did you try uninstalling the wireless adapter in the device manager, then restart your computer. Sometimes when devices don't work corectly, removing them, then restarting the computer. The new hardware wizard should be able to find the device and install it.

How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Rick,

Yes, I did that a while ago.

The wire of antenna was disconnected. Once that was hooked up, the machine connected fine.

Strange part is Dell wireless utility could not detect that.

Thanks for your constant support in this thread. I appreciate that.
