Dimension 4400 - Broadcom V.92 HSF Modem
Hey All,
So, this is some weird stuff going on, let me see if I can make it as easy as possible.
I received a computer from a friend today and they said they couldn't connect to the internet. So, I plugged it in and used their dial-up connection. I heard the operator come on through the modem, so I thought it was the wrong number that was being dialed.
Well, it was the wrong number. However, every time the modem dialed up, the number would be different. Sometimes it was a wrong number, sometimes I heard a guy screaming at the top of his lungs telling me to quit calling, etc.
After hooking up a telephone to the modem, I discovered that when the modem dials, it has a "stutter" type tone when the computer dials; it isn't the stutter tone for voice mail. A bit hard to explain, but when the modem dials, of course it dials the 7-digit phone number. However, during different stages while it is dialing, it will dial a number and then a "stutter" of another tone is played through the modem. So, the telco then translates that into a different digit being dialed.
So, I thought it was the modem. I went and bought an Encore NetoDragon modem and hooked up. It did the SAME thing! When the modem would dial, there would be some stutter tones dialed between the numbers.
I then got out one of my old 1 GB hard drives and loaded Win98 on it and put it into the computer with the NetoDragon modem. It dialed up just fine with none of those stutter tones!
So, it appears that there is some corrupted Telephony files or something on the computer. I really do not want to completely reformat and restore the computer, but I can't think of anything else to try. I've reinstalled the modem drivers several times, I've uninstalled SP2 (someone said SP2 caused some problems like this), but nothing seems to fix it. I didn't know if anyone knew how to like reset or reload the Windows Telephony system so it would overwrite all of the current files and hopefully fix the problem.
