Dimension 8400 Ethernet drivers
I recently formatted my pc. Now i can only connect to the net thru USB connection. I checked device manager and the following 4 devices aren't configured correctly.
Ethenet controller
Video controller
Video vga controller
Audio setup controller
----- These may be slightly wrong as i'm writing them down from memory.
I'm sure this is a driver issue, but when i booted up from the driver disk it didn't install any of these drivers. Do i need to install thse manually, or do i need to download them off the support site?
Regards,
ian

Booting from the drivers disk will not install the drivers. You need to load the drivers disk while you are in Windows, pick each driver that needs to be installed, and install each one.

I am also having the same basic issues after formatting my hard drive but in addition I think I need the chipset driver as well. However when I go out to the Dell website for my particular system, which is a Dem 8300, in some cases it gives more than one choice of drivers, such as the ethernet connection, so how do I know which ones to download?

terry,
If you did not add anything fancy to your system, the network adapter will be the standard intel integrated network adapter:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8300&category=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2834&devlib=5
As for other devices you can either look on your invoice to see what you ordered with the system or use the Original Configuration link on the Dell Support site to determine which devices you have. Alternatively, if you post your service tag, someone can look it up for you.

You have an Nvidia 128 Mb GEForce FX5200 video card. The link to these drivers are, as you have listed:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8300&category=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=4759&devlib=6
I can't tell which modem you have, you may have to call Dell to figure that one out. Since there is no sound card listed on the original configuration, you probably have the sound card integrated on the motherboard. The driver for that is at:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8300&category=0&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2430&devlib=3
The rest of your devices don't necessarily require special drivers. If you encounter problems, however, consider trying to figure out what devices and drivers you need.
