Direct Cable connection

Hi,

I have completed configuring a Direct Cable Connection between an XP ( client ) and a Windows 95 ( host ). Apparently I am successful in logging on to the host since I get a registering the network message. Then, I get an error 736 message stating " Remote Computer Terminated the Control Protocol "  followed by an error 771 stating that the network is busy.

That's it. How do I get the two computers to communicate?

Are you trying to do remote control of one computer by the other?
Is your goal just to "see" and share folders and files?
Windows 95 to XP seems a stretch to me. There are major intervening changes, such as FAT 32, the new NTFS and probably "a million" others.

Having done that myself just recently, I would say this is a tough one (it was for me).
What I did worked for me though.
My steps:
* open the XP case (which had an empty drive bay next to the CD-RW/DVD) and disconnect that drive's signal cable and power
* with the Windows 95 PC shut down, open up and remove the hard drive after disconnecting drive signal cable and power cable
* This assumes (mine was) that the XP system has EIDE (not SATA) -- secure the Win 95 hard drive inside the spare drive bay and connect the signal cable and power that you removed from the CD-RW/DVD
* Close the XP tower case, re-connect all the cables and (last) the AC power and start it up
If you have the fortune that I did, you will see both drives under "My Computer" and can copy files, move files, put onto flash drive (mine is 1 GB each) and/or "burn" to CD-R to your heart's content.

My purpose is to transfer some files from the Windows 95 to the XP machine.

Voila....It worked as described. Figuratively, " worked right out of the box ".

After copying my windows 95 hard disc to the XP hard disc, I printed from Windows 95 generated files both an envelope address and a letter successfully using Word 97.

Also, my Microsoft Quick C compiler appears to be working fine.

Thank you BBraxton.
