jsix1441,

Problems such as frequent disconnects, low or inconsistent connect speeds are often a result of noisy phone lines.  The Conexant D850 is a Winmodem.  Winmodems are notoriously picky about the quality of the signal on your phone line.  If the signal strength is a little low or if the background noise level is a little bit high, they perform poorly.  One thing that you can do to help determine whether the problem is with the phone line is to change the modems operation from a v.90 modem to a v.34 modem.  To do this with a conexant modem, you will need to add AT+MS=V34 to the Extra Initialization Commands for your modem.  Click Start->Control Panel and select Printers and Other Hardware, then select Phone and Modem Options.  Click the Modems tab at the top and then the Properties button at the bottom right.  Click the Advanced tab and you can then enter AT+MS=V34 in the space provided.  Click OK and OK again.  The max connect speed that you get will be 33.6kbps.  If the connection is more reliable, then your original problem is related to phone line noise.  You should call your phone company and have them fix the problem for you.  The source of the noise could be anywhere between your house and the phone company's nearest location.

If you have additional phones attached to your phone line (extensions), you should try unplugging all of them as part of your troubleshooting process.

One important note -- if you are using AOL or another internet service provider and you are using their dialing software, the extra initialization command that you put in may be completely ignored.  If you are using dialing software from your ISP, contact your ISP for assistance with getting the AT+MS=V34 added to their "init string"

Thanks Steve,
I will give it a try and see what happens. And to think I paid extra for this modem.
This just started happening in the last week, before that it worked pretty good.

jsix1441,

If changing the modem from v.90 to v.34 gives you a more reliable connection, then you should contact your phone company for assistance.  BTW, in many systems, a modem is not a standard feature anymore.  This is the same with floppy disk drives.  They are not standard equipment anymore either.  You have to pay extra to get either of them included with your system purchase
