Disconnected downloads

Sorry if this topic has been brought up before. I've searched through the forum but haven't been able to find an answer.

I just got a new Inspiron E1405 running Windows XP. I just pulled it right out of the delivery box a few hours ago and I'm having trouble downloading anything. It pauses a few seconds after the download starts so I have to use a download manager like Get Right (which I had to download twice because my download kept on disconnecting). Even with a download manager, it is very hard to download even 10 MB. The download disconnects every other minute! The problem is not the websites I'm downloading from because I tried downloading multiple files from different sources and both downloads stopped at the same time.

My house has DSL and I have a number of laptops (including two other Dells) accessing the internet through a router but none of them have this problem. Please help? I can't download any updates or programs for the laptop because the downloads keep on stopping!

Also, I just thought I should add that when the downloads cut off, the network icon on my taskbar doesn't change to say that I'm disconnected from the internet.  I'm assuming that it means I'm still connected to the internet but my downloads are just hanging or dropping for some reason.  It also takes just a little longer to load pages when that happens.  Thanks in advance for your help everyone :)

Yes, I'm connecting wirelessly and using Firefox if that helps.

I went to the device manager and chose to update all my network adaptors, is that right? It says all my drivers are updated.

Not only do the downloads stop soon after starting, but I noticed that the internet is very slow compared to the other laptops in the house using the same wireless network.

look in device manager and note the name of your wireless card after which click on the link below and under network you will find the latest available dell drivers for your card.
