JamieK,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

What model modem is this and is the error a Windows error message or your ISP's error message.

The modem is a Conexant SmartHSFi V92 56K DF PCI Modem. The error I'm getting is a Windows error. When I try to test the modem through Hyperterminal, it won't open the port the modem is on.

Thanks

Jaime

Good morning,

We're having the same problem/error with our Dimension 2400 also.  We run an XP Home OS.   We've run the Modem helper-it tells us our COM 1 port is being used and/or there is a software conflict.  Neither a soft or hard boot has helped.   And we haven't found where we can stop or refresh the port (that may not be the right terminology).   We checked our ISP and there are no issues from that end.  The line works-there is a tone and signal.

Thanks,

I did the modem troubleshooter on the computer again and it said I might have an outdated .inf file. Could that be the problem? We have another dell computer, it's a dimension 4600 and it's been the best computer ever, we love it.

Hello,

We've run the modem troubleshooter a couple of times but don't think we received that.  We spoke to tech support for 2 hours yesterday and tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  Nothing worked.  We're coming to the conclusion we need a new modem.

Hope you have better luck.

I think we need a new modem as well, but I'm e-mail tech support hoping there is something else wrong and they can tell me how to fix it.

Thanks for the webpage. The telephoni.ini file doesn't concern me though as we have Windows XP.

I appreciate you trying to help.

We're getting a new modem.  Dell is sending someone out (Thank you!)

If you had a lot of T-storms/lightning lately it may have fried it.  We think that's what happened to ours.  Memorial Day weekend sent us some nasty storms/tornados.  Tech support said it doesn't take much to fry a modem surge protector or not.

Have a good weekend.

Let us know if that solves your problem. If it does, I will have to get a new modem as well.

Thanks

A tech from Dell came out yesterday and installed the new modem.  Other than having to have Windows activated again (?? no idea why other than the tech support from the phone call earlier that week had my husband working in some program files) it works fine.

Hope you get up and running again.

Try running modem helper and tell us what error message do you get. If you get the error message saying cannot open the port, don't blame the modem, it the os that is causing the error.

I've had people coming with similar problems and yes believe me an os reinstall cent percent solves the issue. May sound a little too rash for many people on the fora but try everything that people suggest you to do and if nothing works only then take my advice. go in for a format/reinstall of the os.'

Again plz post us and tell us what error message does modem helper give you

Hi all

I got a similar message on my new 8300 when I tried to use my Zyxel ADSL USB modem.  I contacted Zyxel directly as follows:

"Hi  I am using a 630 modem.

I have a problem with my new XP Home machine. The installation routine is OK and the modem operates as expected until XP reboots. Once XP reboots then the dial up  connection disappears and an error message appears when I try to create another one:  "Error 630: The system could not find the phonebook entry for this connection". I really would appreciate any help that you can give.  "

Their reply was as follows:

"Hi

This is a known fault with Pentium 4 Processors that use HyperThreading (HT). It seems to effect the behaviour of USB devices such as the P630-11.  There is no fix for this, as the fault lies with the processor itself and not with the P630-11."

This is worrying as I was not aware of a problem with hyperthreading and I don't see anywhere where Intel are owning up to a problem.  Might this be anything to do with your problem?

Hope this helps.  I'm stumped and my ADSL provider are trying to wash their hands of it as they provided the free modem as part of the deal and now don't want to provide another one.

Hi,

We do have a P4 processor but don't remember if hyperthreading was included or not-or if we even had a choice.  As far as reinstalling the OS, that was what they were having my husband do over the phone and he said that it worked for a minute and then stopped and then nothing, another storm went through after that and knocked our phone line out so we couldn't even call for a while.  It is something I'll keep in mind if it happens again.

Thanks!
