Error 797 - modem not found

Hi, can anybody help me? I have a Dell 4600 dimension with a built in PC! Connexant modem. In the last 3 months i have lost the modem drivers 3 times. The first time i called Dell and they told me to reinstall the driver. It worked again. This happened a second time and i reinstalled the drivers and everything was ok.

Now today it happened again and i tried reinstalling the drivers from the cd but nothing happens. On the device manager the Connexant modem has diappeared and another modem is showing called "Soft Modem" with a yellow exclamation mark.

I called Dell and they asked me to reinstall the drivers. When that didnt work they told me i would have to format the hard drive and reinstall windows and that it was a software problem which they don't support. They said windows was unable to hold the driver.

This seems a bit drastic. It seems to be the hardware that it can't detect. Could it not be possible that the modem is dead and that the computer just can't see it anymore? If this is the case surely it is a hardware problem and Dell should replace it. Has anyone else come accross this problem.?

I would like to avoid spending days reinstalling my whole system only to find the modem still doesn't work. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

You can try reseating the modem in a different slot. You can go to the device manager and right click & uninstall soft modem. Restart the computer and check if it says new hardware found. Keep clicking on next, it might reinstall the drivers or it might list is as a PCI communication device. If you have the modem driver cd, install modem helper and run it. It will give you a message saying that  modem helper has found problems with the driver and needs to reinstall it. Select the option to reinstall it. The modem helper is a good utility to run a check on the modem.

I don't have a spare slot. I have the slim version of the 4600 dimension and it only come with 2 slots. The network card is in the other slot. I have installed an old external modem that i had lying around and that works ok for now. I guess i should try to swap the 2 cards around and see if that shows up anything.
I'll come back and let you know the result.

Thanks
